Pohela Boishakh History

According to the Hindu solar system calendar, Bengali 12 months have been observed from long ago. But in the Gregorian calendar, it is seen that this solar year began to count in the middle of April. It is seen in history that, after the Mughal Empire began in India, they used to collect taxes on agricultural commodities according to the Hijri calendar in the Arabic year. But since the Hijri year is dependent on the moon, there was not any similarity found with agricultural productions.

And then, for the purpose of solving this smoothly, Emperor Akbar took an initiative to reform the Bengali calendar. As per the order of the emperor, the famous astronomer and thinker Ameer Fatehullah Siraji has started making rules for the new Bengali year based on the solar year and the Arabic Hijri year. According to the information obtained from the various books written on the Bengali year, it was started to be counted from 10th or 11th of March 1584.
