The September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks were four coordinated suicide attacks on key civilian and military buildings in the United States of America. Four airliners were abducted to the assassins on domestic flights. The perpetrators diverted two of them to the towers of the WTC in New York City and one to the Pentagon near Washington, DC. The fourth plane crashed the kidnappers during battles with passengers over the town of Shanksville (PY). The attacks caused the death of some 3,000 people and are considered terrorist mass murder. 17,410 people were evacuated from the WTC buildings in time for their collapse. September 11 is often characterized as a historic break with worldwide consequences.
