World Suicide Prevention Day – 10th September #WSPD 2022

World Suicide Prevention Day 2022: The World Health Organization (WHO) first proclaimed September 10 as World Suicide Prevention Day in 2003. Since then, events have taken place annually on this date, organized primarily by health organizations or suicide prevention organizations.

The WHO justifies the proclamation of this action day that suicide is one of the biggest health problems in the world. Every year, around 1 million people take their own lives. This means that more people die each year than through all the world’s wars. In adolescents and young adults, suicides are even the second leading cause of death after accidents.

Wrong thinking – prejudice about suicidal danger

Suicides are not most commonly committed in the dark, wet-cold months of November and December, but often in spring and midsummer. And even those views on suicide and suicidal are wrong and lead to wrong actions and relief:

  • Those who talk about suicide will not take their own lives.
  • Anyone who addresses a suicidal risk, triggers a suicide first.
  • Anyone who is suicidal is also mentally ill.
  • Anyone who has thoughts of suicide wants to die.

How do you recognize that someone wants to kill self?

The warning signals are not always recognizable as such. According to the DGS, studies show that people visited a doctor more often than usual before committing suicide, but the suicidal idealization was not recognized. More obvious signs of suicide are:

  • Massive withdrawal from social relationships and the environment
  • Threatening or announcing suicide
  • Feeling of worthlessness
  • Strong hopelessness regarding the future
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Phase of “rest” for signs of suicide

How should relatives and friends deal with suicidal offenders?

The most important thing is that you can only help suicidal people who are willing to get treatment. A first step may be to convey the confidence that there is help, even if those affected initially respond defensively. It is also recommended that one talk to suicidal offenders, listen to them and ask. However, as a relative and friend, one should only go so far as one can bear such a crisis situation, that is, recognize one’s own limits and, if necessary, seek professional help for relatives.

A suicide-endangered person can also be helped by finding out about professional help and accompanying them to appropriate doctors and institutions.
